Chapter 13

That same Saturday evening, people talked and murmured around Bianca and Alyssa during their mother-daughter dinner at Mobile Aztec. Though Bianca had invited Melanie, her sister had declined, and disclosing that she had plans of her own. Bianca hadn’t pried—at least not yet. Lunch with her mother and Luther was delicious, but Bianca didn’t see the harm in taking her daughter out to dinner. Just the two of them to help Alyssa get her mind off everything. Also, the perfect time to talk if her daughter would open up.

Silverware clinked, knives scraped against plates, and ice tinkled in glasses. For a Saturday evening, the wait for a table was only fifteen minutes, and there was a small crowd outside. Bianca watched a server bring a take-home container to a nearby table while the fragrance of grilled meat tickled her nose.

Bianca directed her attention to her daughter, who took small bites of her beef enchiladas. Come to think of it, Alyssa hadn’t said much since they’d arrived. “Aren’t you hungry?”

“Huh?” Alyssa raised her chin, blinking her brown eyes. What was she thinking about? “I’m sorry, what?”

“You’re not eating.” Bianca pointed to her plate with her own fork.

“Oh.” Alyssa then took a small bite and swallowed. “Just thinking. I’m fine.”

“About what?” Bianca asked.

“Well…” Alyssa placed her fork on the side of her plate. Staring at her mother, she bit her bottom lip. “I talked to Kendrick today.”

Not quite what she thought they’d talk about, but if this was on her daughter’s mind, she would listen. “And? I thought you two were okay.” Bianca wondered, though she couldn’t get used to the idea of her daughter having a boyfriend.

“That’s just it. He said he was cool with me leaving for the summer to see Dad, but today when we were texting… he didn’t sound as sure. Do you think the separation for that long will be a bad thing? What if he meets someone else and wants to break up with me?”

Bianca sighed. “So one moment he says, ‘I’m cool.’ The next is, ‘Do you really have to go?’”

“Exactly. I want to see Dad, but…”

Bianca leaned in closer, grateful her daughter knew to confide in her.

“I don’t want to lose Kendrick,” Alyssa continued. “He’s my first official boyfriend. Everyone in school knows about us. If we break up now, what will people think?”

This was a moment that Bianca didn’t miss from her own high school days. “Sweetie, this is about you and Kendrick. Who cares what the other kids will say? Trust me, they’re too busy with their own problems to be worried about yours. They should be, anyway.”

Alyssa sighed. “I know. You tell me all the time to ‘be your own person and not what others expect.’” She cupped her cheek in her hand. “This relationship thing is harder than I thought it would be.”

“You thought it was all romance, laughs, and having fun together?”

“Well… yeah,” Alyssa admitted.

Bianca smiled. “That’s part of it, sweetie, but relationships take work. Actual work. There’s communication.
